Omar Update
Posted on Oct 20th, 2008

John Wessel passes on this article from Sunday\'s St Croix Avis The fury of Hurricane Omar was underestimated by the National Hurricane Center but the following graph from part 2 of the article shows otherwise. Charlie Fischer rode out the storm at his home at the east end near the eye of Omar which was located about 20 miles east of St Croix. His estimate from years spent here and experiencing many storms, he felt that the winds were at least 100 MPH and probably closer to 120 MPH (Category 3!). Wessel estimates that Carambola experienced at least Category 1 and possibly higher judging from the extensive tree damage. Clean up is proceeding but will take some time. Hopefully FEMA will bear some of the clean-up burden. Meanwhile, our cistern is full and the backup generator for our water is working well. The same can not be said for CUSI, the sewage treatment plant. Their generator is out of commission making waste treatment virtually non-existent. Saman is out of both power and water, making for some rather grumpy residents. If you get the feeling that Sweet Lime Village is in full hurricane mode, you\'re correct. WAPA "expects"  to restore power to "most "of the island by early next week.
